FAIRSHARE | 2023

Project: App Design & Development

Role: Lead UI/UX  Designer

01

Overview

FairShare is a mobile app that helps groups split expenses easily and accurately. By combining receipt scanning, smart tracking, and payment integration, it eliminates the confusion and friction of managing shared costs.

As the UI/UX designer and researcher, I focused on creating a clean, intuitive experience rooted in user needs — from initial research to branding, design, and testing.

Problem

Splitting group expenses is often frustrating and disorganized. Our research showed that half of our users disliked manually tracking bills, and most admitted to forgetting to split costs altogether — leading to misunderstandings and unpaid balances.

We set out to design a tool that would simplify this process with automation, transparency, and ease of use.

Solution

I was responsible for leading research and shaping the product’s design from the ground up:

  • User Research: I conducted surveys and competitor analysis to understand how people currently manage group expenses. I also developed user personas to guide design decisions around real pain points.
  • Branding & Visual Identity: I created the logo, color palette, and typography to give FairShare a friendly, modern identity that felt approachable yet reliable.
  • UI/UX Design & Prototyping: I designed wireframes and high-fidelity prototypes in Figma, then refined layouts and interactions based on user testing feedback.
  • User Testing & Refinement: I ran usability tests to identify confusion points, then iterated on navigation and layout to improve clarity and flow throughout the app.

Reflection

FairShare was one of my biggest learning experiences. It was the first time I worked directly with a development team while focusing entirely on design. This taught me how to design with implementation in mind — thinking not just about what looks good, but what works and translates well into code.

I also grew more confident in leading design decisions across multiple stages of the project, and learned how to advocate for user needs while collaborating with other disciplines.
